The other day I visited my grandparents, a rarity due to distance, I told them about magical travelling adventures and in exchange heard more tales about their journeys. My grandpa told me about the first time he fell in love with Van Gogh; he’d seen his work before and could not understand the forceful markings on the canvases. It was when he saw some cypress trees blowing in the wind, everything clicked for him and suddenly he thought Van Gogh was a genius for the way he encapsulated motion on a canvas but made everything in the room stand so still. The first time I fell in love with Van Gogh was in Amsterdam where I visited the Van Gogh museum with the biggest collection of his work in the world. I stood in front of one of his self portraits and felt as though I was in a vortex, the circular motion drew me to the centre of the piece and made me feel as isolated as Van Gogh himself looked.

The Rodarte Spring Summer 2012 Collection that was shown in New York for the first time of Wednesday was one of great unexpectedness. This collection was a tribute to Van Gogh which was more surreal than anything they have done before; to see Van Gogh paintings floating effortlessly down the runway was an unusual thing to behold. With a dash of 80's ruffles, gathering and some sheer fabric, the looks were complete. Van Gogh makes people stand still in wonder, Rodarte captured an element of this leaving the fashion world mystified by their ever changing directions.
